The DAVIE SCHOOL OF DANCE offers classes in ballet, jazz, hip hop, modern, Pre pointe, and tap. Dance is for EVERYONE…we have a TOTS CLASS where little ones are taught 3 styles of dance. The ADULT CLASS offers tap and jazz with a performance at the end of the year at our recital.

ALL CLASSES are broken down by ages and level of technique. Classes start at the BEGINNER LEVEL and continue to the ADVANCED LEVEL. For those students interested in MORE STAGE WORK, we offer competitions at the regional and national levels. We HIGHLY recommend our students to travel with the faculty/staff to regional workshops where they meet nationally renowned teachers and instructors, many of whom are judges on the current popular television show “So You Think You Can Dance.”

DANCE IS FOR EVERYONE!!! No one is turned away due to economic situations. We work with many single families who just need a BREAK and want their children or themselves to enjoy a dance class. We also work with Big Brother, Big Sister, Triumphant Counseling Services, Davie County Social Services, Davie County Senior Citizen Center, and our local school system.

Our goal is to provide a fun yet educational experience to our students. We strive for ALL of our students to respect others, to work within a “TEAM” environment, gain self-esteem, and to obtain essential skills that will carry them throughout life.

The Davie School of Dance is owned by Tami Garwood Langdon and is located at 127 N. Salisbury Street, Mocksville, NC 27028. The staff members are Terry Murphy, Khristen Mears and Ashley Murphy.

For more information, call the Studio at 336-751-2898 or Tami at 336-909-2263 or Terry at 336-705-6531 or email us at netlang3@yadtel.net.

Historic Downtown Mocksville welcomes you to our website! We are an association of merchants – retail, restaurant, professional, manufacturing, governmental – dedicated to making Historic Downtown Mocksville your first choice when you have need for one of our services. Located in Davie County, North Carolina, Historic Downtown Mocksville takes pride in its heritage and is striving to keep this historic district vibrant! In recent years, many traditional downtowns have struggled to survive and need constant attention to stay active. That’s what this organization is about – keeping this historic part of Mocksville alive, active and healthy!

Like fingerprints on our hands, each town has its own identity, and most success comes from building on that era to which each downtown belongs, rather than from creating “artificial” quaintness or an imported theme. Our downtown business owners strive to keep touch with our heritage as each makes decisions regarding their own business.

Our downtown area’s atmosphere readily lends itself to businesses which offer goods and services that go well beyond the “same-old, same-old” of chain stores and malls. This helps us to attract tourists from around the region, country and globe, and our association works hard to offer opportunities for both residents and tourists to enjoy their time in Historic Downtown Mocksville. From the many concerts at Junker’s Mill outdoor theater, twice a month cruise-ins from spring to fall, the Daniel Boone Family Festival, the Historic Downtown Bicycle Criterium, to the holiday season open house, horse and buggy rides, and lighted downtown, Historic Downtown Mocksville is a great place to visit and conduct business.

We invite everyone to come spend an hour, a day, or a lifetime in Historic Downtown Mocksville!

Mocksville and Davie County are very fortunate to have resident historian James Wall in our midst. Mr.Wall has written a book entitled The History Of Davie County, which has provided most of the following information.

According to records, a small village named “Mocks Old Field” was in existence here before the time of the American Revolution. Even then this area was considered to be centrally located of the main north-south, east-west routes of travel in North Carolina. Mocks Old Field was used frequently as a secret meeting place for Colonial Forces and Planners, some of whom were members of the Boone Family.

As a teenager, Daniel Boone came to this area with his parents Squire and Sarah Boone, and his brothers and sisters. Their land-hold was west of Mocksville on Rt. 64. Both Squire and Sarah Boone are buried in Joppa Cemetery and the graves can still be visited. All of Daniel’s descendants migrated west.

In the year 1810 a Mocks Old Field post office was established here. This was the first official name for the growing settlement.

When incorporated in 1839 as the seat of the newly formed Davie County (previously a part of Rowan County), the town’s limits were set at “one half mile in each and every direction from the Court House”, to be located in the center of the town square. Most of the fifteen acres of the incorporation was divided into thirty-two business lots and sold at public auction to finance the building of the “Court House and Jail without a tax levy”.

Those of you who have visited Charleston S.C. know about earthquake rods. For those of you that don’t know they are threaded rods placed through a brick building between the floors and ceiling and tightened, pulling a damaged building into a square and adding support to old soft brick. The ends of these rods are often covered with a decorative plate.

You will notice earthquake rods in several of the buildings here in downtown Mocksville. We know that a portion of our downtown was destroyed in 1886 by the same earthquake that devastated Charleston. Much of our downtown was rebuilt following this event and it is generally thought that the rods were installed during the time of the reconstruction with the sole intent of giving the buildings added support.

Mocksville boasts three designated historic districts, each of which is registered with the National Trust. The historic retail district is in the center with two residential districts adjacent to it. The contributing buildings in the retail district are marked with plaques, thanks to the cooperative efforts of the Historic Downtown Mocksville Association, Community Development Corp. and the Town of Mocksville.

Downtown Mocksville passed another mile-stone in 1991 when we were accepted into the Main Street Program of the National Register for Historic Places which is an organization designed to offer grassroots assistance to historic downtowns in their revitalization efforts. We were part of a pilot program especially designed for small downtowns with a population of less than 5,000.

In addition to the Boone family, other famous residents of Mocksville include:

Hinton Rowan Helper, author of “The Impending Crisis of the South: How to Meet It” which was published in 1857.

Thomas Ferebee, a bombardier on the Enola Gay, which dropped the first atomic warhead on Japan.

Joe Jackson Gibbs, Washington Redskins football coach and NASCAR championship team owner, was born on Nov.25 1940 in the old Mocksville Hospital operated by Dr. W. M. Long which was located at the North-East corner of the Court Square

This store is owned by Diane Strouse and has 2 employees, her daughter Kendra Miller and granddaughter Keely Strouse. Anyone of them will be willing to help you in anyway they can. Come in and browse the many wonderful items that are nicely organized and creatively displayed. You can shop for clothing and accessories, antiques, household items, furniture, leather coats, pants and vests, jewelry, and vintage items.

Consignment shopping is an easy, enjoyable way to save money. You can purchase quality, high end items at a fraction of the original cost. I often hear the comment “Why would anyone pay retail price when you can get new or almost new at these prices?”

You are helping the environment by rethinking and reusing. As with clothing, furniture or household items, the trend nowadays is toward recycling. You can make old seem new again. If you are into interior design you should be shopping consignment and looking for antiques and other good quality “REAL” wood pieces.

Something you may not know about Consignment Unlimited is that we have a donation box for the Humane Society of Davie County. You can drop off supplies for them anytime and also donate items to be sold under their account.

Stop by and see us. You’ll be amazed by all of our “great stuff”! Our hours are: Tues. and Wed. 10 to 5, Thurs. and Fri. 10 to 6, and Sat. 10 to 4. Hope to see you!

Three other scales, 1/24, 1/48, and 1/144, are also available. You’ll find kits and do-it-yourself projects as well as ready-made ones, all in a variety of prices to suit everyone’s pocketbook.

If you are looking for dollhouses, room boxes, building supplies, electrical systems, wallpaper, paints, furniture, landscaping supplies, pies to cool on the windowsill, cats to snuggle on the sofa and puppies to chase them, you’ll find them all at Happy House Miniatures along with the people (dolls) to live in the home you create. Miniatures are also a fun way to learn more about history. One simply cannot build an historic log cabin and put a television in it!

Don’t limit yourself to dollhouses, though. There are many other ways to use miniatures: lamps and bookends for your real home, outside miniature scenes, wreaths and other wall-hangings, just about anything you can imagine, you can create with miniatures!

Equally important as a wide variety of supplies is the help and advice you can receive. Mary Lou has more than 25 years of experience behind her and she loves to work through your projects with you.

Happy House Miniatures is located at 135 N. Main Street in Mocksville’s Historic Downtown. Usual hours are from 10 to 5 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Special appointments are available.

Consignment Unlimited, located at 200 Wilkesboro St., has added a new "BOOK ROOM" to its already multi-item store. Owner, Diane Strouse has been in business for 3 1/2 years and says it has turned into quite an interesting venture. I carry everything from baby bibs to antique china cabinets, new and used items, balloon bouquets, western wear and boots. You name it you can probably find it here.

My biggest problem is the volume of items coming in the door. I could actually use more room. I try to keep things organized and I have a good turn over on items. Sales on different items each month helps too. I've had many compliments on how the store looks and the bargains people have found. There were books already in the back of the store but now there will be a room strictly dedicated to this.

Consignment shopping can really help save a few dollars, since the prices seem to be going up everywhere. It makes you feel good because you have found a bargain, supported the local economy and helped the environment all at the same time. No additional resources went into making your purchase and you also prevented another item from making its way into an overflowing landfill. BESIDES "vintage" is in!

You know the old saying....."One man's trash is another man's treasure." It is definitely true if you are a consignment store owner or shopper. Diane says she has a hard time not buying a lot of the things herself. The store is open Tuesday through Saturday. So stop by and check out the new book room and enjoy the relaxed, friendly atmosphere of Consignment Unlimited. It will be worth your trip and if you don't find something you can't live without, I'll be surprised.

As much as most of us like to take that week or two off during the summer for a fun filled vacation to far flung locales, with gas prices at record levels of $4.00++ this summer, many of us are second guessing the wisdom of that driving trip this year. And with the rash of airlines suddenly going belly up due to surging fuel costs, the cost of air travel is surely going to put a crimp in the travel budget.

But enough of the gloom……this situation leaves us with some great choices!! Think about spending your hard earned money and vacation time here in the piedmont of North Carolina!! There is so much to do within a short 1-2 hour drive that, if you haven’t already gotten to know the area well, now is a great time to do it. Of course the merchants of Historic Downtown Mocksville and the surrounding area encourage you to start your trip with a leisurely stroll of the downtown area. Visit our retail shops for their unique offerings and superior service with a genuine smile and have a nice lunch at one of the restaurants here or within a short drive of downtown. Plan to spend an evening here at one of the concerts scheduled at Junker’s Mill (see schedule in this issue). Check out the event schedule for the Davie County Arts Council and the Brock Performing Arts Center. If you plan to tour the vineyards in the area, start with Garden Gate Vineyard right here in Mocksville, then head up North Main Street a few miles to Raylen Vineyard, or out highway 64E to Childress Vineyards in Davidson County.

From downtown Mocksville expand your horizons to check out the things to do in our sister communities in Davie County…Cooleemee, Hillsdale, Advance, Farmington, etc…..the Davie Chamber of Commerce can fill you in on things to do here in the county.

Next, check out the towns of Lexington, Salisbury, Statesville, Elkin, Yadkinville, and if you feel adventurous, spend a day at the Hiddenite emerald mines (just be sure to dress to get dirty).

There is so much to do in the area, that, with a little planning, you can fill your entire vacation with great day trips and actually not break the bank on fuel!!

We look forward to seeing you here in Historic Downtown Mocksville this spring and summer!!

And, while we’re speaking of driving, Historic Downtown Mocksville is making a drive to a green future – we are in the process of replacing our printed magazine with a web site!! It is in the early construction process, but we hope to be up and running during the summer – visit us there at www.historicdowntownmocksville.com.

Chuck King - Historic Downtown Mocksville
